At EY, we offer many different mobility opportunities to our people. New Horizons Program is a program that allows our financial services professionals to travel within our markets, develop their experience and knowledge of the industry, and simply learn new things in a new environment. We sat down with Niamh Morrissey, a senior consultant in Assurance, to discuss her time in Cape Town during her New Horizons Program experience.
When I completed my Bachelor of Business Studies (with a specialisation in finance) at Dublin City University, I decided that going straight into professional services just wasn’t going to be the right decision for me. However, I wanted to do something within this industry. So I joined a graduate program in risk management for a global insurance organisation. This program offered me a lot of opportunities, including a secondment to an offshore office. However, when I looked around the board room, I noticed that all the senior team members had one thing in common — they all started their careers in the Big Four.
From my first day at the EY Dublin office in Financial Services Assurance team, back in January 2015, I knew I made the right decision. My background in the industry really complements the work I’m doing and I feel our clients really appreciate my understanding of their day-to-day work life.
I’ve worked on audit engagements for some of our largest banking clients in EMEIA, and the skills I’ve developed have been endless. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been able to develop so many new skills in terms of project, team and time management in less than three years.
At EY, there are countless opportunities for new experiences. My most recent opportunity was a three-month secondment to the EY Cape Town office, with the EY EMEIA New Horizons Program. New Horizons Program provides high performers with a three-month international experience, helping them to expand global mindsets, grow their EY network and enhance their industry or competency knowledge.
EY, really, is an organization across borders. My colleagues in Cape Town welcomed me with open arms and ensured I had an unforgettable experience both in and out of the office. I worked on some of the largest financial services engagements in the Cape Town office. While it was challenging at times, the people I worked with were what made the difference. The management team in the Cape Town office were very open and approachable, and always available to help with any problems, which is similar to how the management team are in the Dublin office. This approach was very comforting, especially as I was in an unfamiliar country, trying something new.
Reflecting on my time abroad, my secondment was a diverse and jam-packed experience. An experience like this wouldn’t have been possible without EY. I’ve learned so much about myself, our people, clients and global presence. I can’t wait to see what my future with EY brings.
