Through our peer-based global award program, Better Begins with You, we recognize and celebrate EY people who have found inspiring and impactful ways to bring EY’s purpose – building a better working world – to life. We spoke to Razan Abdel Hadi and Samantha Brook, our Regional Winners, about their work driving more women into technology careers.

Congratulations on winning the EMEIA Financial Services award for ‘Creating Exceptional EY Experiences’ – a tough category. How does it feel?

We are thrilled to have won the EMEIA Financial Services award for our Women in Technology (WiT): Tech Bootcamps initiative. We’re proud to be supporting our organization’s diversity and inclusiveness agenda and setting up an initiative that ensures every one of us — no matter what rank, gender or background — have a platform to pursue our passion in technology at a firm-wide level.

Who’s behind the scenes making this happen with you?

We were delighted to share the news with our EY Women in Technology (WiT) sponsoring partners Cheryl Martin (UK Financial Services) and Fiona Capstick (UKI Advisory). They have been with us every step of the way and supported us throughout this journey. We also could not have succeeded without the dedication of our facilitators, who gave their time and effort to run these hands-on practical sessions and producing learning material.

So, tell us a little more about the Tech Bootcamps?

The boot camps are after-hours training sessions that we run for anyone in the UK and Financial Services businesses. We run the sessions monthly with around 50 attendees, where we train them on programming languages, such as: R; VBA; SQL; Python; and agile training. We have effectively upskilled over 200 colleagues in these new skills, something that’s so important in the rapidly changing world of work.

What are your thoughts on the better begins with you?

Better begins with you has given us an unparalleled opportunity to share what we’re doing with a wider EMEIA Financial Services (and perhaps even global) audience and has connected us to key stakeholders within the organization. It demonstrates that EY encourages intraprenurialism, and supports the staff of any level who seizes the initiative and creates something new.
